Units & conversions used
Area in square feet; metric areas are converted at 1 m² = 10.7639 ft². Cost is tiled area (ft²) multiplied by your installed rate per square foot — the way tile setters commonly quote, with tile, setting materials and labor priced in.
Formula & source
Source: the $10–$30/ft² default band reflects commonly published 2025–2026 US pricing for professionally installed tile, from straightforward ceramic floor layouts at the low end to large-format, patterned or shower work at the top. It is a budgeting aid, not a quote — tile material alone ranges from about a dollar to well over fifteen dollars a square foot, so set the rates to your actual tile and local quotes. For material quantities, pair this with our tile calculator, grout calculator and thinset calculator.
Worked example (you can verify by hand)
Input: 200 ft² of tile, rates $10–$30/ft².
- Low estimate: 200 × $10 = $2,000
- High estimate: 200 × $30 = $6,000
Expected output: estimated installed cost $2,000–$6,000 for 200 ft².
Limitations — what this cannot do
- One flat rate for the whole job. Waterproofing, backer board, floor leveling, heated floors, niches and bench work in showers are usually priced as separate line items.
- Pattern complexity is invisible to a flat rate — diagonal layouts, herringbone, mosaics and small tiles all take more labor per foot than a straight grid of large tiles.
- It does not count tiles or materials; use the tile, grout and thinset calculators linked above for quantities to order. Get itemized local quotes before budgeting.
FAQ
How much does it cost to tile 200 ft²?
At the commonly published 2025–2026 installed band of $10–$30/ft², about $2,000–$6,000. A straight ceramic floor lands low; a shower with waterproofing, niches and mosaic accents lands high or above. Material choice alone can swing the total by thousands, so price your actual tile before budgeting.
How can I check a tile quote?
Divide the quote by the tiled area to get their $/ft² and compare with the band above. Ask whether backer board, waterproofing, demolition and disposal are included, which tile the material allowance assumes, and how much waste they are ordering. Our tile calculator gives you an independent tile count to compare against.
What drives tile prices up?
Surface prep and waterproofing first (especially showers), then layout complexity, tile size at both extremes (mosaics and very large format both slow the work), and material price. Multiple small areas cost more per foot than one big open floor.
How can I save money on a tile job?
Pick a mid-priced, larger-format tile in a straight layout, handle demolition yourself if you are able, and keep the fancy patterns to a small accent area. Buying materials yourself helps only with the installer's agreement — get quantities right first with our grout and thinset calculators.
