Flooring Cost Calculator

What new flooring is likely to cost installed, based on the floor area and a per-square-foot rate you can adjust to the material you are considering and quotes in your area.

Measure each room's length × width and add them. Add the same waste allowance you use for ordering material (usually 5–10%).
Defaults are a commonly published 2025–2026 US range spanning budget laminate/vinyl through mid-grade hardwood — replace with your local quotes.

Area in square feet; metric areas are converted at 1 m² = 10.7639 ft². Cost is floor area (ft²) multiplied by your installed rate per square foot — the convention flooring installers quote, with material, underlayment and labor priced in.

Formula & source

Cost range = floor area(ft²) × low rate … floor area(ft²) × high rate

Source: the $6–$18/ft² default band reflects commonly published 2025–2026 US pricing for installed residential flooring, running from budget laminate and vinyl plank at the low end to mid-grade solid or engineered hardwood at the top. Premium hardwood, tile and patterned installs can price higher. It is a budgeting aid, not a quote — set the rates to the material you have chosen and to local quotes whenever you have them. Need box counts instead? Our material calculators for hardwood, laminate and vinyl flooring work out how much to buy.

Worked example (you can verify by hand)

Input: 500 ft² of flooring, rates $6–$18/ft².

  1. Low estimate: 500 × $6 = $3,000
  2. High estimate: 500 × $18 = $9,000

Expected output: estimated installed cost $3,000–$9,000 for 500 ft².

Limitations — what this cannot do

  • One flat rate for the whole job. Subfloor repair or leveling, old-floor removal and disposal, stairs, transitions and baseboards are usually priced separately.
  • Materials vary enormously — sheet vinyl and exotic hardwood differ by an order of magnitude per square foot. The default band is a mid-market span, not a promise for your chosen product.
  • It does not estimate how much flooring to buy; use the material calculators linked above for box counts including waste.

FAQ

How much does it cost to install 500 ft² of flooring?

At the commonly published 2025–2026 installed band of $6–$18/ft², that is $3,000–$9,000. Budget laminate or vinyl plank lands low; mid-grade hardwood lands in the upper half. Your material choice matters more than the room size — narrow the rates once you have picked a product.

How can I check a flooring quote?

Divide the quote by the floor area to get their $/ft² and compare with the band above. Ask whether removal of the old floor, subfloor leveling, underlayment, transitions and baseboards are included, and whether the material quantity includes a waste allowance. Those extras are where quotes diverge.

What drives flooring prices up?

Material grade first, then subfloor condition — self-leveling and repairs add real labor. Stairs, diagonal or herringbone patterns, and moving between many small rooms all raise the per-foot labor. Removing old tile or glued-down flooring is another common adder.

How can I save money on new flooring?

Choose a mid-priced click-lock product, remove the old flooring yourself if you are able, and keep the layout straight (no patterns). Buying material yourself can help if the installer agrees — first work out exact box counts with our laminate or vinyl flooring calculators so you do not overbuy.
