Units & conversions used
Room dimensions are in feet; flooring is sold by the box, with coverage printed on the carton in ft² (commonly 15–30 ft² per box). Metric inputs are converted first: 1 m = 3.28084 ft and 1 m² = 10.7639 ft².
Formula & source
Source: coverage per box is the manufacturer's printed figure for your product. The 10% waste allowance is the long-standing flooring industry rule of thumb for solid hardwood — it covers end cuts, staggered joints, and culling boards whose color or grain does not fit. Diagonal or herringbone layouts raise cutting waste to 15% or more. This is estimating practice, not a code requirement.
Worked example (you can verify by hand)
Input: 20 ft × 10 ft room (200 ft²), 20 ft² per box, 10% waste.
- Room area: 20 × 10 = 200 ft²
- With 10% waste: 200 × 1.10 = 220 ft² of coverage needed
- Boxes: 220 ÷ 20 = 11 exactly
Expected output: 11 boxes to buy (220 ft² of coverage).
Limitations — what this cannot do
- One rectangular room. Closets, hallways, stairs and angled walls must be measured and added separately.
- Boxes only — it does not count underlayment or moisture barrier, nails or staples, transitions, baseboards or shoe molding.
- Solid hardwood must acclimate in the room before installation (commonly 5–7 days stacked with airflow, per the manufacturer's instructions). That is a schedule item, not a quantity, but skipping it causes gaps and cupping.
- Buy all boxes from the same production run (dye lot) where possible, and keep one spare box for future repairs — a discontinued floor cannot be matched later.
FAQ
How much extra hardwood should I buy for waste?
10% for a straight layout in a rectangular room. Go to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, rooms with many corners, or if you are picky about board color — solid hardwood is a natural product and some boards in every box will be culled.
Why does hardwood need to sit in the room before I install it?
Wood takes on the room's temperature and humidity. Acclimating (commonly 5–7 days for solid hardwood, always follow the manufacturer's instructions) lets boards reach equilibrium so the floor does not gap in winter or cup in summer after it is nailed down.
How much does hardwood flooring cost?
The wood itself commonly runs in the $3–$10 per ft² range for common domestic species (2025–2026), with wide-plank and exotic species above that; professional installation commonly adds a similar per-foot amount. Check the coverage per box before comparing prices — a cheaper box that covers 16 ft² can cost more per foot than a 24 ft² box.
Does it matter if my boxes come from different production runs?
Yes. Color varies between runs. Buy the full quantity at once from one run if you can, open several boxes at a time during installation, and mix boards from different boxes as you go so any variation blends across the floor instead of forming a patch.
