Vinyl Plank Flooring Calculator

How many boxes of vinyl plank (LVP) a room takes — vinyl cuts clean with fewer unusable offcuts, so the waste allowance runs lower than wood.

Printed on the carton; LVP boxes commonly cover about 18–30 ft².
LVP scores and snaps with little waste: 5–7% is typical for a straight layout, 10%+ for diagonal.

Units & conversions used

Room dimensions are in feet; vinyl plank is sold by the box, with coverage printed on the carton in ft². Metric inputs are converted first: 1 m = 3.28084 ft and 1 m² = 10.7639 ft².

Formula & source

Boxes = ⌈ room length(ft) × room width(ft) × (1 + waste%) ÷ coverage per box(ft²) ⌉

Source: coverage per box is the manufacturer's printed figure. The waste allowance reflects how vinyl plank is actually cut — score-and-snap or a utility knife produces short, reusable offcuts and there is no grain to match, so installers commonly carry 5–7% for straight layouts instead of the 10% used for wood. Estimating practice, not a code requirement.

Worked example (you can verify by hand)

Input: 20 ft × 12.5 ft room (250 ft²), 20 ft² per box, 7% waste.

  1. Room area: 20 × 12.5 = 250 ft²
  2. With 7% waste: 250 × 1.07 = 267.5 ft² of coverage needed
  3. Boxes: 267.5 ÷ 20 = 13.375 → round up

Expected output: 14 boxes to buy (267.5 ft² of coverage).

Limitations — what this cannot do

  • One rectangular room. Closets, stairs and angled walls must be measured and added separately; stair treads and risers take separate stair-nose pieces, not plank boxes.
  • Boxes only — underlayment (many LVP lines have it pre-attached), transitions, trim and, for glue-down products, adhesive are not counted.
  • Floating click-lock floors need a perimeter expansion gap per the manufacturer (often 1/4 in); it does not change the box count but cannot be skipped.
  • Buy from one production run where possible and keep a spare box: prints and wear-layer textures change between runs and lines are discontinued often.

FAQ

How much extra vinyl plank should I buy for waste?

5–7% for a straight layout in a rectangular room. Vinyl cuts cleanly and offcuts are easy to reuse elsewhere in the room; step up to 10% for diagonal layouts or rooms with several doorways and angles.

How much does vinyl plank flooring cost?

The planks themselves commonly run in the $2–$7 per ft² range (2025–2026), from thin budget lines to thick rigid-core (SPC/WPC) products with 20-mil+ wear layers; glue-down commercial lines price differently. Judge by wear-layer thickness and core type, and compare cost per ft² of box coverage.

Is vinyl plank really waterproof?

The planks are — vinyl does not swell or rot. Seams on a floating floor are not a sealed surface, though, so standing water can reach the subfloor; "waterproof" describes the material, not a guarantee for the whole installation. It is still the safest of the plank floors for kitchens, baths and basements.

Click-lock or glue-down — does the box count change?

No, coverage math is identical. The difference is in the extras: glue-down needs adhesive (and usually no underlayment), click-lock needs underlayment unless pre-attached, and click-lock can be removed and re-laid, which makes DIY repairs easier.
