Units & conversions used
Room dimensions are in feet; laminate is sold by the box, with coverage printed on the carton in ft². Metric inputs are converted first: 1 m = 3.28084 ft and 1 m² = 10.7639 ft².
Formula & source
Source: coverage per box is the manufacturer's printed figure. The waste allowance follows standard flooring estimating practice: every row ends in a cut, joints must be staggered, and the offcut only sometimes starts the next row, so 10% is the usual allowance for a rectangular room (15% for diagonal layouts). Estimating practice, not a code requirement.
Worked example (you can verify by hand)
Input: 20 ft × 15 ft room (300 ft²), 24 ft² per box, 10% waste.
- Room area: 20 × 15 = 300 ft²
- With 10% waste: 300 × 1.10 = 330 ft² of coverage needed
- Boxes: 330 ÷ 24 = 13.75 → round up
Expected output: 14 boxes to buy (330 ft² of coverage).
Limitations — what this cannot do
- One rectangular room. Closets, stairs and L-shaped spaces must be measured and added separately.
- Boxes only — underlayment (if not pre-attached to the planks), vapor barrier, transitions and trim are not counted. Check whether your laminate has pad attached before buying underlayment separately.
- Laminate floats: it needs a 1/4 in expansion gap around the perimeter and at doorways. The gap does not change the box count, but skipping it causes buckling.
- Most laminate needs 48 hours of in-room acclimation before installation (manufacturer's instructions govern). Keep one spare box — wear-layer patterns are discontinued quickly.
FAQ
How much extra laminate should I buy for waste?
10% for a rectangular room laid straight. Use 15% for hallways, diagonal layouts, or rooms with angled walls — every angle turns into offcuts that cannot always be reused.
How much does laminate flooring cost?
The planks themselves commonly run in the $1–$5 per ft² range (2025–2026), from budget 7 mm boards to premium 12–14 mm waterproof-rated lines; underlayment, trim and transitions are extra. Compare boxes by cost per ft² of coverage, not by box price.
Does laminate need underlayment?
Usually yes, unless the planks have pre-attached pad (many mid-range and premium lines do). Underlayment provides moisture protection on concrete, sound damping and a smoother feel. Doubling up pad under pre-attached planks can make the floor feel spongy and stress the click joints — follow the manufacturer's spec.
Can I install laminate in a bathroom or kitchen?
Only products rated for it. Standard laminate's fiberboard core swells when water sits in the joints. Waterproof-rated laminate (and vinyl plank, which is fully synthetic) handles wet rooms better — check the rating on the box before buying.
